Yesterday started with an early morning drive across the Rift Valley from Nairobi to the western border of Kenya, near Uganda and Lake Victoria. This may sound exciting, but the drive took 10 hours and there were only 2 scenic overlooks. Today was spent teaching many of the physicians and nurses in further screening for cervical cancer. Teaching the exam certainly slows down the process and instead of 5 mins per patient when I am on my own, it took 30 mins. I am a much better “doer” than teacher. One patient who was known to be HIV positive was found to have an early form of cervical cancer and will be scheduled for surgery next week. The students are very eager to learn and ask many questions. My clock is finally starting to get on local time and I am not so tired by 5 pm.
